The Three Gorges: Nature’s Grand Theater

The Three GorgesQutang Gorge, Wu Gorge, and Xiling Gorge—are the most awe-inspiring sections of the Yangtze River. Spanning about 192 kilometers, they showcase towering cliffs, mist-covered peaks, and deep, emerald-green waters.

  • Qutang Gorge (瞿塘峡): The shortest (8 km) but most dramatic of the three gorges, Qutang features sheer limestone cliffs rising up to 1,200 meters. As the gateway to the Three Gorges, it is often the most photographed section of the Yangtze.
  • Wu Gorge (巢峡): Known for its ethereal beauty, Wu Gorge is 45 km long and famous for the 12 peaks of Wushan Mountain, with the Goddess Peak (Shennu Feng) being the most legendary. The misty scenery here is mystical, resembling a classical Chinese painting.
  • Xiling Gorge (西陵峡): The longest (76 km) and most challenging gorge, Xiling is known for its rapids and intricate rock formations. It was historically dangerous for navigation, but the construction of the Three Gorges Dam has tamed its once-turbulent waters.
